Among other things, South Beach is famous for its unique architectural style. Miami’s Art Deco District is a popular tourist attraction that spans roughly 15 blocks along Ocean Drive and Washington and Collins Avenues. Art Deco concepts burst onto the Miami design scene primarily in the 1920s and1930s, and experienced a renaissance in the 1980s when the Miami Design Preservation League worked to save the neighborhood’s dilapidated buildings from demolition. Today, the Art Deco District is a thriving community of funky hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, galleries, and boutiques.

Art Deco Welcome Center. The Art Deco Welcome Center on Ocean Drive is the perfect place to start your Miami architecture adventure. Pick up a map for a self-guided tour of the neighborhood, or participate in one of the many guided tours that offer in-depth information on local history and the Art Deco movement and its influence on Miami structural design. One of the oldest surviving examples of Miami Art Deco design is the Community Church located at Drexel Avenue and Lincoln Road. It was built in 1921. Art Deco Weekend Festival. South Beach Miami, Florida is the site for the much anticipated Art Deco Weekend Festival that takes place every winter. The annual festival celebrates Miami’s legacy as the Art Deco capital of the world with classic films, lectures, free live music, neighborhood architecture tours along famed Ocean Avenue, and an evening parade with marching bands, colorful floats, street performers and much more. Art Deco Weekend is sponsored by the Miami Design Preservation League and is one of the most widely attended events in South Florida.   [Top]
